CRYSTAL TAN

Yoga Teacher

After over a decade of practicing and teaching yoga, my style has evolved to what I call Intuitive Flow. What is intuition? A gut feeling? A voice in your head? Or a knowing? For me, I learnt that intuition is really a sense of knowing that comes from layers and layers of experiences, information gathered, and my emotional responses to those experiences in the course of my entire life. And it is this intuition that forms my decision making to life’s everyday choices. To whether I’m moving with life with ease and acceptance or with inner conflict or struggle. And we can know this in our body. In our muscles, skin, heart, abdomen, hips, feet and our breath. Our bodies can tell us immediately whether we are in a right place or not. Yet so many of us live life leading with the head (mind).

My yoga class will take us on a guided journey through the body using the foundations of hatha and vinyasa flow yoga. Together we will listen to the subtle cues and sensations of our unique individual bodies, so we learn the language of which it speaks to us, and learn postures and breath work to sooth, comfort, lengthen, stretch, ground and balance ourselves. The meditative flow and embodied mindful movements will help to clear away mental and emotional clutter, and increase spaciousness and clarity in both body and mind. Then step away from class feeling more integrated as a whole.

Intuitive flow is essentially just making ourselves, our own yoga teachers. By tuning into the guidance that is already there. This class is suited to all yoga levels and ages as we will only be taking each pose as far as our intuition tells us it's safe to do so.

My journey: My first Yoga teacher training with Tribe yoga in 2010 in Rishikesh India, with foundations based on Dynamic Yoga (ashtanga based), I then felt drawn to the now defunct, but still brilliant and heart-opening Anusara yoga and was introduced to Tantra. Motherhood took up a lot that in between, but now I am studying yet another teacher training in Melbourne call the Alchemy of the Embodied Feminine Wisdom and Embodied Flow. And have really found that yoga now is much less goal-oriented, but rather an incredibly powerful, self-care therapy with roots in spirituality that I am continually learning and growing with.

When I’m not yoga-ing, I’m spending time with my husband and two crazy boys, hiking the hills of this beautiful Yarra Valley with our dog in nature. I’ve recently started painting watercolours and am terribly addicted to that as well. Originally from Singapore, now living in Warburton Victoria, Australia.
